Every day, thousands of women raped in Congo
Rape is considered as a tactic of war to inflict fear and shame.
A recent study indicates as many as 1152 women in the Congo were raped every day, meaning 48 women per hour. This is no doubt makes this African country became the most dangerous country to live woman.
Reporting from the page the Associated Press, Wednesday, May 11, 2011, figures obtained based on research at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is 26 times higher than the figures released by the UN. Previously, according to the UN, estimated there were 16,000 rape cases every year.
To obtain this figure, the Institute at Johns Hopkins conducted a survey by interviewing four eyes of victims of sexual violence Congo. Michelle Hindin, a professor of gender violence specialist at the institute, said this figure should be even greater, because some of the victims are reluctant to tell their experiences.
"This figure is certainly surprising," said Hindin.
The results of this survey will be published in the Journal of Public Health United States, June. Survey shows more than 400,000 women have been raped in the Congo over the span of 12 months in 2006 and 2007.
Congo, this nation of 70 million people since tens of years has been marred by civil war. Some militant rebel groups use rape and other sexual violence as a tactic of war.
This measure is intended to cause fear, shame, dominance of the army, or to force some people to leave their communities.
